A 4-week after-school program introducing kids to real food, creativity, and
the science of “what fuels our bodies.”
Wednesdays – January 14th, 21st, 28th and Feb 4th
Program Overview
Ages: 8–13 (can adjust younger/older groups separately)
- Class Length: 1½ hours (e.g. 4:00 – 5:30 PM)
- Frequency: Once per week for 4 weeks
- Group Size: Ideal 8–12 kids (hands-on, safe supervision)
- Location: CAFA B DATA Café or community partner kitchen/classroom
Program Goals
- Teach kids how to make delicious, whole-food snacks and simple
meals. - Help them understand what real ingredients are and why they matter.
- Encourage creativity, confidence, and teamwork in the kitchen.
- Build awareness around how food affects energy, focus, and mood.
4-Week Curriculum Outline
Week 1: Food as Fuel — Energy from the Earth
Lesson Focus: What are whole foods vs. processed foods?
Hands-On Recipes:
o Build-Your-Own Energy Bites (oats, nut butter, honey, seeds)
o Fruit-Infused Waters
Mini Lesson: Reading ingredient labels — spotting hidden sugars,
“fortified” vs. natural nutrients.
Take-Home Activity: “Pantry Detective” worksheet — find 3 foods at
home and list ingredients.
Week 2: Power of Plants — Color, Fiber, and Flavor
Lesson Focus: Why fruits and veggies give us vitamins, fiber, and natural sweetness.
Hands-On Recipes:
o Rainbow Veggie Wraps with hummus
o Fresh-Made Smoothies
Mini Lesson: “Eat the rainbow” — each color’s benefit.
Take-Home: Color-by-food chart or veggie sticker tracker.
Week 3: Smart Snacks, Clean Swaps
Lesson Focus: Rethinking favorite snacks; making them clean and
satisfying.
Hands-On Recipes:
o Homemade Granola Bars or Fruit Leathers
o Oven “Fries” with Clean Dips (Greek-yogurt ranch or avocado
mash)
Mini Lesson: Processed vs. ultra-processed foods — what’s in chips or
cereals?
Take-Home: “Snack Swap” guide.
Week 4: From Scratch — Cooking Confidence
Lesson Focus: Bringing it all together — cooking as self-care and
community.
Hands-On Recipes:
o Mini Whole-Wheat Pizzas or Veggie Flatbreads
o Fruit Parfaits with Homemade Yogurt Topping
Mini Lesson: Balanced plates — protein, carbs, and healthy fats.
Celebration: Kids invite a parent/guardian for a mini tasting.
Take-Home: Certificate + recipe booklet.
Timing Options
- After School: 4:00 – 5:30 PM (ideal for community center or café setting)
- Alternate Option: 3:45 – 5:15 PM for elementary schools or younger groups
