What “Friends” Teaches Me About Food, Connection, and Community

Over the last month, I’ve fully immersed myself in a Friends rewatch — the entire series — and wow, I forgot how emotionally invested you can get in a TV show. The Ross and Rachel storyline? The ultimate will-they-won’t-they. The hopeless romantic in me is yelling at the screen like, “You care about each other so much, just figure it out already!”

Truly… I could have a full relationship analysis discussion with anyone who will listen — but I digress.

It’s funny how a show can make you feel warm and fuzzy, or comfort you out of a bad mood. I think one of the reasons Friends resonates with so many people is because these six characters choose each other. They build community through everyday moments — lounging at Central Perk, sharing late-night takeout, laughing around Monica’s kitchen table. There’s no loneliness there. They show up for one another.

And in a world that has shifted so much — post-COVID, online shopping, online socializing, online food ordering — I sometimes wonder how much real-life connection we’re losing along the way. The days when you’d hang out at the mall, bump into someone at the grocery store, or sit in a diner for hours talking? Those things built friendships. They built community.

Sometimes I think life felt easier then — more fulfilling in a simple, human way. Less lonely.

That desire for connection is absolutely why I love hosting, cooking, planning events… honestly, why I love what we do at Mosaic. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people gathered: laughing, meeting someone new, yelling at the Packers game, celebrating life’s moments big or small. It’s my version of being Monica — cooking for people, taking care of everyone, wanting everything organized and beautiful, making sure people feel at home. (I also have a little Rachel in me… I’ll admit that part too. Phoebe is hilarious, but not so much my personality 😄)

My hope — and my vision for Mosaic Catering — is to create places and moments that feel like that warm hug a show like Friends gives you. When you walk into CAFA B DATA to grab lunch, I want you to feel like someone will smile at you. You might run into a friend. You might make one. Maybe you just sit with a good book and feel the energy of community around you.

We want to build tradition — reasons for people to gather in real life again — whether through a simple café lunch or a beautifully catered milestone event.

And yes… I could go on for hours about how Ross deserves Rachel, and how despite his whininess he always steps up for her, and how Rachel ultimately realizes that his nerdiness is actually part of his big heart and constant care for her. But I’ll stop (for now 😉).

In the end, food is love. Community is love. We’re here to help build both.
